Batoche National Historic Site

http://parkscanada.pch.gc.ca

The late 1800's represented a peroid of unrest for many of the different cultural groups in the North West: First Nations were demanding food, provisions and assistance promised in the treaties, the Metis were threatened, yet again, of being disenfranchised from their settled lands and European settlers were becoming angered and disillusioned with the national policy. The events which preceded the outbreak of violence involved complicated political, economic, cultural and social factors. Batoche imparts a piece of that history to each visitor.

Batoche is located on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River, situated along Highway #225, 76 kilometers south of Prince Albert and 86 kilometers north of Saskatoon. The site is open May 8 to September 30 daily 9 to 5. Fees apply. Strollers and motorized chairs are available to those who need assistance maneuvering the site. Over the last few years, major structural work has been done on the St. Antoine-de-Padoue church to stabilize and protect it. The church has been re-opened to visitors.
